y2q22qv Some centuries ago only a few million people spoke English, language wasn’t important to the rest of the world and it wasn’t even known. Exporting of English began in the seventeenth century with first settlements in North America assisted by massive immigration in nineteenth and twentieth centuries. That has given English its present standing in the world. Now English is the most widespread language, with 400 million speakers. It has the largest vocabulary, with approximately 500 000 words and 300 000 technical terms. It is the language of business, technology, sport and aviation. This will no doubt continue, but it is absurd to think that all other languages will die out.
